Materials Sources

I found the suspender pieces on ebay at fairly reasonable prices and included those links below.  Supplies may also be found in sewing stores.

Heart Clips: Available Here
I found that the metal used for these tends to be soft, and after a few “uses” the clip may no longer close.  This is easy to fix with pliers; just bend the heart piece farther away from the little metal shelf which presses the clip together.

Strap Sliders: Available Here

Lace Heart Chart

9 sts and 16 rows repeated to make the pattern

Row 1 (RS): K4, yo, ssk, k3
Row 2 (And all WS Rows):  P9
Row 3:   K2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k2
Row 5: K1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k1
Row 7:  k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk

Row 11:  (k2tog, yo) twice, k1, (yo, ssk) twice
Rows 13, 15: K9

Note:

Due to the small needle size, I ended up using double pointed knitting needles with point protectors on one end to simulate traditional straight needles, without the excess length/weight of full length straights, or the extra cording of circulars.

To Make the Custom Size

First:  Measure the length of the suspender strap needed with a measuring tape across the shoulder from the front attachment point to the back attachment point.  It may be helpful to have the help of a friend.  Alternately, try pinning the measuring tape at the selected points.

It is very important that the waistband of the pants/skirt hits the waist at the point you desire.  For example, if you measure the length wearing high-waisted jeans, then try to wear the finished straps with hip-huggers, the straps will be too short.

Record the original measurement here:

Now add two inches to the above measurement and record it here:

Assembly Instructions:

Weave in loose ends.

Wet block both straps and cross piece heavily, pinning the edges to ensure a flat result.

If the edges continue to curl, grosgrain ribbon may be sewn to the back as a facing.  This will also help to further eliminate any unwanted elasticity.

Custom Size Only:

Attach the clips to the ends of the straps by feeding the strap through so that the right side is facing outward and the tail overlaps the strap by one inch, then sewing.

Try on the straps, criss-crossing them as if finished, making sure that the hearts are going the correct direction.  If you find that the knitting has stretched beyond your original measurement, an easy solution is to unravel the knitting to the appropriate point, then reattach the clips.

Adjustable Size Only:

The strap sliders must be placed on the straps before the clips are attached.  Arrange the straps in an X, making sure to distinguish between the ends that attach to the front and the ends that attach to the back.  Feed the strap through both slots in the slider (under-over-under) and through the slot of the heart-clip, making sure that the right-side of the knitting is facing outward.

Turn the slider and strap over.  The tail of the strap be right side facing up, and folded back over the rest of the strap which is wrong-side facing up.  Feed the tail of the strap under the exposed center bar of the slider, then fold it over and attach it to itself.  Sew through one layer only.  Repeat with other strap.

Both Sizes:

While wearing the straps and with the aid of a mirror or friend, pin the straps in the center of where they cross in back.  This should leave approximately one-fourth of the strap below the center point.  Sew the Back cross-piece over the straps, making sure to secure both straps to the edge of the cross-piece.

Happy Knitting!
